Asonaba Nana Wiredu, Acting Chairman of Commercial Transport Operators has expressed disappointment and frustration over the return of foreign beggars to the streets, citing concerns over safety and road accidents.
Speaking on Happy morning show with Fati Shaibu Ali, he lamented the Ghana Immigration Service’s (GIS) decision to allow these individuals back onto the streets, where they engage in begging and hawking at traffic intersections.
“We are very disappointed in the Ghana Immigration Service for allowing foreign beggars to return to the streets,” Asonaba said.
“They were removed previously due to safety concerns, but now they’re back, posing risks to themselves and motorists.
Drivers argue that the presence of these beggars contributes to road accidents, as they often distract drivers and pedestrians.
The situation has escalated, with reports indicating that the number of foreign beggars on the streets now exceeds previous levels.
Asonaba emphasized that authorities, particularly the Ghana Immigration Service must take decisive action to address this issue and prioritize road safety.
The Commercial Transport Operators urged GIS and relevant authorities to revisit their strategies and take concrete steps to curb this menace, emphasizing that collective efforts are needed to mitigate road accidents and enhance public safety.
