The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the public of its readiness to conduct elections in the conflict-prone Bawku Central constituency and surrounding areas, despite persistent security challenges.

The assurance comes in response to concerns raised by Ghanaians about the ability of residents to participate in the December 7, 2024 elections amid the ongoing ethnic unrest.

The Upper East Regional Director of the EC, William Obeng Adarkwa disclosed that the EC is working closely with security agencies to ensure the elections proceed peacefully in Bawku.

According to him, the Commission has already begun preparations, including training election officials and equipping them with the necessary skills to manage the electoral process.

The Bawku area has experienced heightened tensions following the return of Seidu Abagre, a rival chief installed by the Nayiri. Abagre, who had been in exile due to an arrest warrant issued in February 2023, returned to the town on October 26, 2024, after the Kumasi High Court quashed the warrant earlier in the month. His return has rekindled longstanding chieftaincy dispute, leading to violent clashes that have claimed lives and left several injured.

Authorities have imposed a 6 am to 6 pm curfew, with security personnel deployed to maintain order. Despite these challenges, the EC remains confident in its ability to deliver credible elections in line with its constitutional mandate.

The Commission has also called on residents of Bawku to support efforts to create a peaceful atmosphere, emphasizing the importance of stability in ensuring a successful electoral process.
