The Electoral Commission has said that it has registered a total of 4,445,346 Ghanaian voters. According to the commission, the Greater Accra Region leads with 20.9% of the registered voters. Ashanti Region follows with 18.4%, and the Eastern region is at distant third at 9.5% and the Central region at 9.4%. The North East region is at the bottom with 1.7%.

This was disclosed by Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Commissioner In-Charge of Corporate Services in the third session of press briefing by the EC dubbed “LET THE CITIZEN KNOW.”

Dr. Asare also added that the Greater Accra region lead with number of the challenge cases in the country.   “In absolute terms, with 1,391 the Greater Accra leads in the number of Challenged cases. However, as a percentage of the total registered voters in each region, the Oti region leads with 0.5%, followed by Ahafo at 0.42% and Volta at 0.39%. The region with the least percentage of challenged cases is Bono with 0.02%.”

Registration in Secondary Schools

The EC also pledged that, they will not disenfranchise anyone who wants to register hence there will be have a mop-up registration for all those who will not be captured during the main phases of the registration exercise.

Registration for applicants in the Senior High Schools where there are no registration centers took place on Friday and Saturday. The Commission is still looking at the option of going back to these schools in the course of the week to register those who did have the chance to register. This is because reports coming to us indicate that in most of the schools the team could not even register 50% of them.

In our endeavor to ensure that every Ghanaian who qualifies is given the chance to register, the Commission will also have a mop-up registration for all those who will not be captured during the main phases of the registration exercise. Note that we will not disenfranchise anyone who wants to register.

The compilation of new voters register by the EC commenced on June 30, 2020, through to July 5, 2020, in the first phase of the exercise across the country.

The exercise, which is expected to last for 38 days, is projected to capture the biometric data of about 17 million Ghanaians eligible to vote ahead of the 2020 December 7 general elections.
