The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has outlined details of a major agricultural initiative under President John Dramani Mahama aimed at boosting farm productivity through mechanisation.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Monday, April 6, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu indicated that the President has committed to establishing Farmer Service Centres in 50 agricultural districts across the country to provide essential support services to farmers.

He noted that the centres will be equipped with more than 4,000 pieces of agricultural machinery to enhance efficiency and reduce the burden of manual farming.

The equipment will include 660 tractors, 200 tractor trailers, and 200 mini tractors, alongside a range of attachments such as ploughs, harrows, cultivators, mower units, and cutter bars designed for various farming activities.

The package will also feature specialised equipment, including 460 three-disc ploughs, 300 four-disc ploughs, and 330 16-disc harrows, as well as fertilizer spreaders and multiple precision seed drills to improve planting efficiency.

In addition, 300 boom sprayers, 50 combine harvesters, and crop-specific headers for maize and soybeans are expected to be deployed under the programme.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu further revealed that President Mahama recently cut sod for the commencement of work on the centres at Afram Plains, marking the start of the project’s implementation phase.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s agriculture sector, improve yields, and provide farmers with access to mechanised services across key farming districts.
