The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has strongly condemned the assault on a journalist of the Class Media Group, describing the incident as unacceptable and assuring the public that firm action will be taken against those responsible.
His comments come after a viral video showed a Class Media Group journalist, Samuel Addo, being assaulted by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service while filming an altercation between firefighters and traders at the Kasoa New Market.
In a statement, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said the conduct of the officers involved falls far below the professional standards expected of a state security institution mandated to protect lives and property.
He stressed that such actions undermine press freedom and public confidence in public institutions.
He condemned the incident in no uncertain terms and assured that the “rogue elements” who carried out the attack would be dealt with firmly to serve as a deterrent to others.
The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of journalists in the line of duty, with media freedom advocates calling for swift investigations and appropriate sanctions against those found culpable.
