FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis for their spirited display at the FIFA Club World Cup, even as their journey came to an end.

A commanding 3‑0 defeat to English side Chelsea in Philadelphia sealed Esperance’s fate, eliminating them from Round of 16 contention. The loss confirmed their third-place finish in Group D, behind Flamengo and Chelsea .

Nevertheless, Infantino underlined the broader significance of the moment.

“Esperance really did honour to Tunisian football, to African football with extraordinary performances here in the United States,” he said, referencing their spirited clash with Chelsea .

He emphasized the tournament’s mission—to provide global exposure for clubs outside Europe and South America.

“The objective of the FIFA Club World Cup is precisely to give a platform to teams like Esperance… to make their players shine, to help them invest more in football, and to compete with the big European teams.”

Despite the elimination, Infantino praised the determination and support shown by the team and their fans:

“The Esperance fans were exceptional. They took over the city of Philadelphia… Their chants, passion, and enthusiasm were a treat for everyone.”

Quick Recap: Group D Results
• Lost 2‑0 to Flamengo in opener
• Beat LAFC 1‑0 in second match
• Lost 3‑0 to Chelsea, ending their run.

Even without advancing, Esperance’s campaign was marked by moments of pride: a hard-fought victory over LAFC, a respectful defensive effort, and fan support. FIFA’s expanded tournament platform showcased the club—and African football—to a global audience.
