Four local based players handed Black Stars call-up

Black Stars head coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has handed calls up to four Ghana Premier League players in his squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations double header against Sudan.

Akonnor named Hearts of Oak’s Richard Attah, Asante Kotoko’s Habib Mohammed, Kwadwo Amoako of AshantiGold and Aduana’s Yahaya Mohammed.

The number of local based players invited has seen an increase from three in the previous call ups to four which is aremarkable feat achieved in Akonnor’s first Black Stars call up.

According to him, the call up is encourage more local based players to work hard and be consistent in their performances for their teams.

“It is important to encourage local players. The last time I checked it was three and now it’s four. They (local based players) have to be consistent with their performances so they can be called into the team”, he said at the meeting.

David Duncan who was tasked with monitoring and selecting players from the local scene as assistant coach of the Black Stars also seconded the view of the Black Stars coach and urged the local based players to ensure consistency in their performances.

Duncan stated that a lot of players on the local scene merited a Black Stars call up but due to the few games played in the Ghana Premier League only four were selected.

Midfielders: Mubarak Wakaso (Jiangsu Suning, China), Alfred Duncan (Fiorentina, Italy) , Thomas Partey (Atletico Madrid, Spain) Kudus Mohammed (Nordsjaelland, Denmark), Iddrisu Baba(Mallorca, Spain) Andre Ayew (Swansea, England)
