The Government of Ghana has imposed an immediate ban on the importation of excavators into the country as part of efforts to curb illegal mining and protect the nation’s water bodies.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Transport and signed by Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe announced the implementation of a new policy dubbed “No Permit, No Excavator”, which takes effect immediately.
According to the directive, all shipping lines are to desist from transporting excavators into Ghana without prior approval, and dealers or importers must obtain a permit from the Ministry of Transport before any such equipment is brought into the country.
“All dealers and importers of excavators, as well as the general public, are advised to take note and strictly comply,” the statement emphasized.
The move comes amid heightened concerns over the environmental impact of illegal mining, particularly the destruction of water bodies and forest reserves due to the uncontrolled use of heavy-duty earthmoving equipment.
The Ministry stressed that enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance, warning that violators will face legal consequences.
This latest measure adds to a series of government interventions aimed at bringing illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, under control.
