Ghana coach Chris Hughton reveals top contenders for 2023 AFCON

Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton, has disclosed his favored teams to clinch victory at the upcoming 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire.

In an interview with Talk Sports, Hughton acknowledged the strength of many teams but highlighted Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, and Ghana as the top contenders for the prestigious title.

Expressing his thoughts, Hughton noted, “There are numerous formidable teams, such as Morocco, especially considering their performance in the World Cup. Egypt, having secured the most victories, Senegal as the current champions, and Ghana, backed by the immense support we’ll be sending, and our close proximity, are all strong contenders.”

In the group stage, the Black Stars of Ghana are set to face formidable opponents, including record champions Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde.

Earlier, Hughton had released a provisional 55-man squad for the 2023 AFCON tournament. The squad, recommended by the technical team and submitted to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), features several in-form players.

Notable names in the squad include Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Bernard Tekpetey, Richmond Lamptey, Majeed Ashimeru, Yaw Yeboah, Edmund Addo, and Forson Amankwah.

The 2023 AFCON is scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
