Ghana legend, Stephen Appiah has called for the inclusion of players who excel in the Ghana Premier League and other local competitions to be part of the Black Stars team.

According to the former Black Stars captain who appeared before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, he doesn’t understand why the best player and top scorer in the Ghana Premier League does not get a call up.

He said it is the dream of every local player to get into the national team and it takes a psychological toll on them if they perform and are over looked because they don’t play in Europe.

“Ghana Premier League top scorer should be in the Black Stars. The players perform and when they are neglected, it’s even leads to depression because the ultimate aim of every local player is to perform and get a chance in the Black Stars.”

“There should be equal opportunities and players shouldn’t be at a disadvantage just because they play in Ghana. If we continue this process, no good player will be willing to stay and play in the Ghana Premier League.”

Stephen Appiah in 2006 led the Black Stars to Ghana’s first appearance at the FIFA World Cup in Germany.
