Member of Parliament of the Abura Asebu Kwamankese in the Central Region, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has said that Ghanaians have the right to complain about the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill and government respects that right.

According to the Minister of State in charge of Communications, Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill popularly known as the dumsor levy though hash is necessary in order to prevent the collapse of the economy because of the energy sector.

Felix maintains that this Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill which introduces a GHS1 per litre on petroleum products is a hard pill to swallow hence the need for Ghanaians to understand the difficult decision government has to take.

“Ghanaians have a right to complain, we respect that, but this [dumsor levy] is necessary because if we don’t take a difficult decision, the economy will come to a standstill because of the energy sector,” Felix Kwakye Ofosu said in an interview.

The Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which introduces a GHS1 per litre on petroleum products is projected to generate GHS5.7 billion in revenue.

According to the government, the funds will be used to reduce debts in the energy sector and ensure a stable and reliable power supply.
