Editor of the Informer Newspaper, Andy Kankam, says the Ghana Police must restore the lost confidence of the Ghanaian people in them.
According to him, the police can only restore confidence in the service through the discharge of their duties.
“The way the police carry themselves and the lack of respect thereof for them is really sad,” he stated in the Editors’ Take edition of the Happy Morning Show with Samuel Eshun.
He explained the continuous misconduct and many scandals rocking the Ghana Police Service has led to the citizenry losing confidence in them, with the recent Nkoranza killings and the alleged Police involvement in an armed robbery making matters worse.
With the pledge to serve with Service and Integrity, the police however seems to be doing the opposite with their actions.
“All the IGP sought to do when he was appointed was to build the image of the police and restore confidence in them. If Dampare is trying to build confidence in the police then I don’t think they (Police) have to be engaged in any misconduct. I know there have been cases of misconduct in the Police where officers involved have either been fired or interdicted,” he stated.
Residents of Nkoranza are outraged by the death of Albert Donkor, who was picked up by the police, following a robbery incident on the Nkoranza-Kintampo road.
They believe Albert may have been targeted after chancing on a robbery scene involving some police officers.
The Police gave their own version of events leading to Albert’s death, naming the victim (Albert) as a member of a six engaged in a number of robberies at Nkoranza.
Reacting to the recent shootings involving Police Officers, Andy Kankam noted with fear how the Police have become trigger happy. He advised the Police to exercise caution and protect the people.
To him, crime in Ghana will be reduced if Police visibility is increased. “I urge the Police to increase the community Police patrol as it is the way to go. The Police should also not engage in misconduct or take the confidence Ghanaians have in them for granted.”
