Ghanaian middle-distance sensation N Vanee Anchike continued her remarkable rise in American collegiate athletics on Friday, delivering a breathtaking performance at the prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California and in the process, cementing her status as one of the most exciting track and field prospects to emerge from Ghana in recent years.

The UTRGV junior, originally from Lambussie Naawie, Upper West Region, and a former student of Islamic Senior High School, stormed to a fourth-place finish in the women’s 800-meter invitational race in a stunning time of 2:03.00, a new program record and personal best that currently ranks among the top 10 times in the entire NCAA West. She also won her heat in the process, adding yet another layer of shine to an already glittering outing.

The performance represents a dramatic leap forward for the 21-year-old, who has been on an upward trajectory since arriving on American soil. Her 2:03.00 clocking is a significant improvement on the 2:08.74 she posted at the Charlie Thomas Invitational earlier this year a time that was then the fastest in the Southland Conference, clocking in nearly three seconds faster than the next fastest competitor which earned her the UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week honour.

Friday’s effort also builds on a breakthrough indoor season in which she was named the SLC Women’s Indoor Newcomer of the Year in March 2026, while helping UTRGV claim its first-ever indoor conference title. That remarkable indoor campaign followed an equally impressive debut in cross country, where she also won the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year title, earned second-team All-American standing, and led her team to a 30th-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional.

The journey to these heights, however, stretches back further. During her junior college years, Anchike set an NJCAA best in the 1000m with a time of 2:52.39, an early sign of the prodigious talent that would eventually draw attention at the Division I level.

Competing under the Ghanaian flag in World Athletics-sanctioned events, Anchike N-Vanee Lambussie Naawie is not merely a collegiate standout, she is an emerging international prospect, currently ranked among the top 1,000 women in both the 800m and 1500m globally by World Athletics.

Back in Azusa, Anchike was not the only UTRGV runner to shine. Teammates Lilliana Guerrero (2:07.41) and Kailey Salazar (2:07.92) also posted personal bests in the same invitational heat, logging the second and third fastest times in program history respectively, with all three women winning their individual heats in what was an extraordinary group effort.

UTRGV wrapped up Day 1 of the Bryan Clay Invitational with seven personal bests and five new entries into the outdoor program record books. But it was the girl from Kumasi who stole the headlines and if her current form is anything to go by, she is only just getting started.
