The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to prioritize the safety and protection of journalists across the country.

Speaking at a meeting between the GJA leadership and the Police Management Board on Wednesday, August 20, at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra, Mr. Dwumfuor stressed that the work of journalists and the police share similarities, as both professions involve gathering, processing, and using information, journalists for news and police for intelligence.

He noted that any attack on a journalist in the line of duty constitutes a violation of their rights and undermines press freedom.

Mr. Dwumfuor cited incidents where journalists had been assaulted by a senior police officer during the Ablekuma North re-run ,and another at the EOCO office when the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, was arrested and taken there.

He called on the Police Management Board to implement stronger measures to safeguard journalists, describing them as the “fourth estate” who work hand in hand with the police in serving the public.
