The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has instructed all teachers in the Garu District of the Upper East Region to immediately vacate their classrooms and seek safety following a deadly shooting incident that claimed the life of a headteacher and three others.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the tragic death of Yahaya Bukari, a headteacher who also served as the GNAT District Treasurer, alongside three other individuals.

Describing the situation as “heart-wrenching,” GNAT National President Rev. Isaac Owusu strongly condemned the ongoing violence in parts of the Upper East Region, particularly in Garu, Bunkpurugu, and Bawku.

“We were deeply shaken when we heard the news. It’s painful that peace continues to elude our brothers and sisters in these areas,” Rev. Owusu said. “What’s even more worrying is the lack of visible action from the government to restore lasting peace.”

Citing Ghana’s Labour Act, Rev. Owusu emphasized the legal obligation of employers to ensure workplace safety. “Section 118 clearly states that employers must provide a safe working environment. When that is compromised, Section 119 allows employees to remove themselves from danger.”

He explained that, due to the deteriorating security situation in Garu, GNAT can no longer guarantee the safety of its members. As a result, the association is directing all teachers across the district not just at the Garu D/A School to leave immediately.

“This is not a partial withdrawal. We are asking every teacher in the Garu District to flee for their lives,” he declared.

Rev. Owusu paid tribute to the slain headteacher, noting his bravery and dedication. “Mr. Bukari died a hero. He gave his life shielding his pupils from harm. Without his intervention, the casualty toll could have been far worse.”

GNAT has called for urgent government intervention to address the insecurity and protect lives in the affected areas.
