Leader of Public Sector Reform Project, Yaw Osafo-Marfo is concerned about the huge number of printed passports at the various Offices of the issuing authority which have not been claimed by its owners.
According to Yaw Osafo-Marfo, over 86,000 new passports have been printed and they are currently sitting at Passport Offices but attempts to get the owners to collect them have proved futile.
The Senior Presidential Advisor, made this appeal while providing updates on the results achieved under the Public Sector Reform Project at a press briefing on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at the Ministry of Information.
“Part of our job was to help selected State agencies to improve efficiency and accountability and one of such agencies is the Passport Office. Printing of passports is very expensive but government has subsidized it for citizens.”
“The cost of a single passport is $100 but government takes up a chunk of the cost. Regardless of the cost, we have helped to improve efficiency of the process but people are not even coming to pick up their passports. Currently we have printed over 86,000 passports but the owners have not come for them and that is a major concern for us”.
The Public Sector Reform Project was to help sixteen (16) selected agencies improve efficiency and accountability in delivery of key public services to citizens and firms, such as issuance and renewal of passports, vehicle registration and environmental permits, and registration of births and deaths with US$35 million credit to finance from the World Bank.
