The government of Ghana is scheduled to have a meeting with transport unions today, February 11, 2025 to discuss their proposed fare increases in response to the ongoing rise in fuel prices.

This meeting comes amid mounting concerns from commuters and transport operators about the financial burden caused by fluctuating fuel costs and their impact on the transport sector nationwide.

The discussions follow a statement from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), one of the country’s largest transport unions, which noted that recent fuel price hikes had reached the threshold for fare adjustments.

The union highlighted that consecutive fuel price increases throughout January, along with rising operational costs, have made it increasingly difficult for commercial drivers to sustain current fare rates.

Transport Minister, Joseph Nikpe Bukari reassured the public that the government remains committed to engaging all stakeholders to find a fair and balanced solution.

He expressed confidence that an agreement would be reached to establish a pricing structure that benefits both transport operators and commuters.
