The Union of Trainee Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UTNMG) has demanded its nineteen (19) months outstanding allowances from government.

“The government’s failure to address this issue is a betrayal of trust and UTNMG demands prompt payment of outstanding arrears and commitment to prioritizing trainees’ welfare”.

The Union accused government of releasing only three (3) months allowances instead of the entire 19 months.

“Another striking event in June 2024, the government released GHc219 million to 104,000 Trainee Nurses and Midwives, while GHc 216 million was released to 67,000 Teacher Trainees who have several supports from the government, such as absorption of their feeding fees, students’ loan and flexible fee payment policy”.

The union in a statement, mentioned that, the government’s neglect of trainee nurses and midwives will have severe consequences on the
outcome of the election.

“Trainees will hold politicians accountable, and the consistent neglect of their welfare
will not be tolerated”.

They however noted that, government’s inaction has shattered the trust of the trainees, exacerbated by the financial burden on them and made health training the reserve of the rich minority.
