Government announces reintroduction of Road and Bridge Tolls

Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has written to Ministry of Roads and Highways to confirm the authorized fees and charges ahead of the reintroduction of tolls on roads and bridges this year.

In 2022, when Mr. Ofori-Atta read the budget for that year in parliament , he abolished road tolls and instituted the Electronic Transaction Levy in an effort to raise more money from a wider range of citizens.

In a letter sighted by happyghana.com, dated Friday, March 10, Mr. Ofori-Atta provided comments from his Ministry regarding plans for the fees and charges put forth by the Roads Ministry for approval.

The government has revised the schedules of the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022, (Act 1080).

The amendments are in line with the government’s intention to restart collecting tolls on some roads pending the completion of steps to identify roads and highways to be affected by the reintroduction of tolls.

There is a composite average increase rate of 88.05 percent across board.

Heavy buses, for instance, would pay GH¢1.5 – as approved by the Finance Ministry – instead of the proposed GH¢2 by the Roads Ministry.

Saloon Cars will pay GHp50 instead of the proposed GH¢1.
