General Secretary of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), Mark Korankye has charged the government of the day to take charge of the production and supply of educational materials to basic schools in the country.

On his accord, education is the key to the growth and development of countries and argues the government must make sure the right thing is done when it comes to the sector.

His comments are in reaction to a book published by private publishers making unfair remarks about Ewes.

Textbook Publisher, Badu Nkansah Limited has apologised for the offensive tone used in one of its books, ‘History of Ghana Textbook 3’ which has found its way onto the market although yet to be approved by the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA).

The said publication features a song that shows the Ewes’ identity by making inappropriate references which are deemed unfortunate and in contradiction to NaCCA’s Book Submission Guidelines and Approval Methodology which guide the work of publishers and authors.

“How can the government allow someone to produce a textbook and make it available on the market when it has not been approved? Where is the textbook the government produced to guide these manufacturers?” he inquired.

Mark Korankye said, “In the absence of government material for students, the room is given to individuals who are business-minded to do what they want. The government must open its eyes and do the right thing. It must take responsibility for the production of the required textbooks for basic schools”.

He however advised the government to enforce its oversight responsibility on private publishers it decides to work with in the publishing of these books.
