Daniel Afriyie strike ensured Hearts of Oak edged closer to the Ghana Premier League title following a 1-0 win over arch-rivals Asante Kotoko on matchday 31 of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League.

The two Ghana Premier League giants were tied on points heading into this crucial game after matchday 30.

Hearts of Oak had secured a 2-1 win over Legon Cities to accrued 56 points whilst Kotoko had beaten Karela United 2-1 to clinch same point.

The Phobians started the game with a lot of intense in the opening minutes but were dealt with a big blow as midfielder Emmanuel Nettey had to be substituted due to an injury.

Hearts of Oak were the better side in the first half with a series of chances but failed to convert them into goal.

Hearts of Oak chance at scoring a goal came in the 36th minute from a Fatawu Mohammed effort which struck the wood work.

The first half ended with the two sides going into the break with the spoils shared.

Hearts of Oak continued with their dominance in the second half and nearly scored just after recess from a Salifu Mohammed strike which was saved by the Kotoko goalkeeper.

The Phobians broke the deadlock in the 66th minute through Daniel Afriyie Barnie who drived the ball into the roof of the net.

Asante Kotoko nearly got the equalizer from an Augustine Okrah effort but was saved by the goalkeeper.

Hearts of Oak held onto their lead to win the game and have opened a three point lead on top of the table.
