An Accra Criminal Court has adjourned the third retrial of Gregory Afoko’s murder trial to April 7.

Afoko, who was held on remand at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison for nearly a decade, is currently out on GHS 500,000 bail, while his co-accused, Asabke Alangdi, remains on death row.

The adjournment was granted at the prosecution’s request, with the court approving the new date on the condition that the seven-member jury is properly constituted.

Gregory Afoko is on trial for the May 2015 murder of Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who died from acid burns after being attacked at the entrance of his Bolgatanga home.

Before his death, Mahama reportedly identified Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi as his attackers.

In April last year, a seven-member jury unanimously convicted Alangdi of conspiracy but acquitted Afoko of murder and conspiracy to commit murder following a split verdict.

The Criminal Court, presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, is set to begin a third retrial, provided all outstanding issues regarding the jury’s composition are resolved before the next adjourned date.

On February 24, an Accra High Court granted Gregory Afoko, bail of GH¢500,000 for allegedly conspiring to commit murder.

He is accused of plotting with convicted accomplice Asabke Alangdi to kill Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
