Former GJA President, Dr Affail Monney, has acknowledged the positive impact of digitalization on the journalism industry. He noted the widespread use of mobile phones and Artificial Intelligence (AI) has greatly facilitated the swift dissemination of information, revolutionizing the way journalists work.

However, Dr Monney also cautions that the introduction of AI can have a downside, potentially negatively affecting the practice of journalism.

During the Mega Launch of Happy Kaseɛbɔ on Happy 98.9FM, Dr Affail Monney spoke with Kwadwo Sefa-Dankwah and highlighted a concerning trend in the media industry. He noted that many media outlets prioritize being the first to break a story over accuracy, leading to the spread of misinformation.

This rush to be the first to publish or broadcast news often results in feeding the public inaccurate information, he warned.

He emphasized the crucial role the media can play in national development, citing the exemplary use of media during the Late Kwame Nkrumah’s administration. He drew parallels with countries like the United States, India, and others that prioritize media development, highlighting the positive impact it has on their progress.

However, he expressed disappointment that some individuals have infiltrated the media landscape, disseminating irrelevant and harmful content that hinders the country’s advancement rather than contributing to its growth.

In his concluding remarks, he sounded a warning that the public’s trust and interest in the media are waning due to the lack of credibility among many media outlets and journalists.

He seized the opportunity to issue a clarion call to all media houses, urging them to prioritize credibility and regain the public’s trust, emphasizing that this is crucial for the media to remain a vital component of a healthy democracy.
