The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson has issued a strong warning to fishermen to stop using poisonous substances like DDT in their fishing practices. During a community engagement in Kete Krachi, Oti Region, she emphasized that the increased demand for fish has led to a rise in harmful fishing methods.

Hawa Koomson highlighted that the number of fishermen has surged due to the growing consumer market, resulting in desperate measures to meet demand. She stressed that using DDT not only harms aquatic life but also poses serious health risks to consumers. The chemical drives away remaining fish in affected water bodies and causes numerous health issues.

Instead, Hawa Koomson urged fishermen to adopt rightful and sustainable fishing practices. This appeal comes as part of the government’s efforts to promote responsible fishing and protect Ghana’s marine resources. The Minister warned that those caught engaging in illegal fishing practices will face severe punishment.

The Minister’s call to action aims to safeguard the health of consumers, protect marine life, and ensure the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s fishing industry.
