Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Youth and Culture, Hon. Johnson Kwaku Adu, has expressed concern over the regular violent happenings at various stadia in the country.

According to him, these violent acts by supporters greatly stains Ghanaian football could rob us of the opportunity to host the 2023 African Games.

His comments come after the recent assault on referee Maxwell Hanson by fans of Division One League side, BA United after he awarded a first-half penalty for Real Tamale United in their National Division One League game in Sunyani on Sunday.

The Ahafo Ano South West MP, in an interview with Ohene Bampoe Brenya on the Happy Sports Show, expressed: “What happened in Sunyani was an unpleasant sight to behold especially when we have the opportunity to host 2023 all African games. We can lose the host of the African Games if this hooliganism continues in our football. It is a threat to Ghana football and it is a threat to 2023 African Games”.

The MP reasoned that it will be very sad and disappointing if Ghana were to lose this right as a result of the hooliganism in Ghana football considering the fact that the government had put in much effort to host the 2023 African games.

“Government has made provision of five hundred million dollars for the African Games, it’ll be very sad and disappointing if Ghana is not able to host the African Games”, he added.

Meanwhile, Johnson Kwaku Adu, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to punish culprits to serve as a deterrent to others who engage in hooliganism.

Fans of Division One League side, BA United, mercilessly beat up referee Maxwell Hanson after he awarded a first half penalty for Real Tamale United in their National Division One League game in Sunyani on Sunday.

Referee Hanson was unable to continue the match after the incident, bringing a premature end to the game.
RTU occupies the top of Zone 1 of the Division One League and sits a point above Berekum Arsenal and Tano Bofoakwa.

This meant a win over BA United would have guaranteed their return to the Ghana Premier League.

Meanwhile, Ghana is set to host the 2023 African Games(previously christened All-Africa Games) after the country beat Egypt to the hosting rights in 2018.
