Chairman Wontumi, officially known as Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has dismissed claims by Elikem Kotoko, the Deputy CEO of the Forestry Commission, which linked him and his company, Akonta Mining, to illegal mining activities.

These allegations arose following reports of a police operation that led to the arrest of several individuals, including Chinese nationals, on lands allegedly connected to Akonta Mining.

Elikem Kotoko posted on his Facebook page alleging that some Chinese nationals had been arrested while working on Akonta Mining site.

In his response, Wontumi emphasized that Akonta Mining has not been operational for a while and stressed that the company operates under a valid mining license.

He pointed out that current efforts at the site focus solely on land reclamation, including planting thousands of coconut trees to restore the environment.

He firmly denied any involvement with the individuals arrested or any illegal mining activity.

The situation underscores the ongoing challenges Ghana faces in tackling illegal mining and its impact on the environment and communities.
