The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, popularly known as OK Frimpong has firmly declared his support for the youth of Amantenaman, who have raised strong concerns over potential mining operations in parts of the constituency.
In an official statement, OK Frimpong said the anxieties expressed by the youth are “legitimate” and “valid,” emphasizing that the protection of the land, which sustains the farming-based livelihoods of residents, must remain a priority.
“Our land is our future, Any activity that risks the destruction of farms, water bodies, or the long-term wellbeing of our people cannot be taken lightly,” he stated.
Residents of Amantenaman recently staged a demonstration to register their opposition to any form of mining in their community, citing fears of environmental degradation, water pollution, and the destruction of farmlands, consequences that have long been associated with mining activities in Ghana.
OK Frimpong acknowledged the ongoing national consultations led by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources under the government’s Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skill Development Programme, but noted that mistrust still lingers among the people.
“As MP, my duty is to amplify the concerns of my constituents, not override them. If the youth do not want it, then I cannot want it on their behalf,” he stated, reinforcing that his stance reflects the unified position of the community.
He also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for various developmental interventions in the constituency, including new roads under the Big Push Agenda, improved school infrastructure, fertilizer support for farmers, and recent government-backed agricultural purchases. He said these efforts show a commitment to supporting farmers and boosting local economies.
However, he insisted that support for development must not come at the expense of the environment or the agricultural foundations of the constituency.
Looking forward, OK Frimpong urged stakeholders to focus on development initiatives that protect livelihoods while enhancing economic growth. His recommendations include:
1. Establishing agro-processing facilities to add value to local produce
2. Expanding vocational and technical training for young people
3. Improving road networks to support agriculture and market access
4. Strengthening environmental protections
5. Developing economic programmes that create decent and productive jobs
He further pledged to establish a food processing factory within his first year in office, aimed at boosting employment, supporting farmers, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for the youth.
“With the strength of our youth, the fertility of our lands, and the goodwill between government and community, we can generate sustainable wealth without resorting to mining,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to safeguarding the future of Asante Akim North.
