National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said that he is one of the few Ghanaians who prefer boxing over football.

According to Asiedu Nketia football as a team sport can be ruined solely by the mistake of one player but in boxing the boxer has his or her destiny in his/her own hands.

He said he prefers boxing because the defeat or victory depends solely on the person fighting in the ring and not on a teammate who can ruin everything by a single mistake.

“I like boxing. In football, one person can be bribed and cause the team to lose, ruining all the hard work of the team.”

He further claimed that boxers don’t accept bribes to lose a bout because they alone will face the consequences in the ring.

“But have you ever seen a boxer who has been bribed to lose a bout? If you take the bribe, you are the one who is going to suffer the beatings. So in boxing, the responsibility is fixed on the person who takes the bribe, but in football, one person can ruin everything by taking a bribe behind the team’s back. That is why I like boxing,” he said.

It is worth stating that in both football and boxing, there have been many instances of bribery scandals that have plagued the sports, with authorities continuously amending rules to help curb the situation and keep the games competitive.
