The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) that the Police Service will ensure a peaceful by-election at Akwatia on September 2 and provide full protection for journalists covering the event.

Addressing the leadership of the GJA on Wednesday, August 20, at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra, the IGP disclosed that about 6,000 police personnel, who had undergone intensive training at Huhunya, have been deployed to Akwatia to maintain law and order during the polls.

He noted that the police had received intelligence about threats on social media suggesting that some individuals planned to cause disturbances at the election.

However, he assured the media and the general public that the police is adequately prepared to deal decisively with any such attempts. He further stated that those behind the threats are unlikely to act, describing them as “cowards.”

Mr. Yohuno stressed that the media and the police work hand in hand as partners, adding that journalists should go about their duties at Akwatia with confidence, as the police would be on the ground to safeguard their safety.
