Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has unequivocally denied any involvement in a plan to secretly record a conversation with the former NPP Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu.
On Tuesday, September 12, the IGP appearing before the Parliamentary Committee looking into the audio denied the accusations that he was part of a plot to covertly record conversations between Bugri Naabu and the three implicated police officers, COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi.
The IGP made clear his dedication to following the law and safeguarding the credibility of the Ghana Police Service. He declared his willingness to fully assist with the continuing inquiry and promised to offer any information or support required to ascertain the truth of the tape’s release.
COP Mensah told the committee when he appeared that the IGP plotted the recording of the audio with Bugri Naabu. He added that his information indicated that the IGP had the full unedited recording.
The IGP also added that some wild allegations made against him by the three police officers have caused severe pain to him and his family.
Bugri Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been a central figure in the leaked tape scandal.
The leaked audio recordings purportedly contain conversations involving him and other high-ranking police officials, over a plot to remove the IGP to help the NPP rig the 2024 polls.
