The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu West, Tamimu Halidu, has identified illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, as the primary cause of recent flooding in Nkawkaw and its surrounding communities.
According to the MCE, the activities of illegal miners have obstructed river channels and natural waterways, significantly contributing to the flooding in areas such as Nkawkaw township, Nkawkaw-Asuogya, and Amanfrom.
“Obstruction of river flow due to illegal mining is a major factor behind the flooding we’re experiencing,” he stated. “We need stricter enforcement of mining laws and regulations to prevent further environmental damage.”
