Reports reaching Happy98.9FM indicates that some drivers in parts of Kumasi have refused to reduce the number of passengers in their vehicles per the President’s directive on social distancing to fight the novel coronavirus.

Happy FM’s Kumasi correspondent, Bismark Kyei giving a report on the observance of the President’s directive in Kumasi on Happy FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political show said, “Some drivers in Kejetia refused to reduce the number of passengers per row in their cars from four (4) to three (3). They argued that it was not reasonable for them to do so when the government had also refused to reduce fuel prices.

He however noted that, the security personnel deployed to Kumasi to help enforce this directive and others did a good job with drivers caught disregrding the directive. He said, “The security personnel did really well. Whenever they saw drivers with their cars fully loaded and not practicing the social distancing policy, they stopped these cars and enforced it. To some extent, they even found different cars, that were ready to adhere to the policy, for passengers.”

Bismark also observed that some parts of the Ashanti Region had strictly adhered to the partial lockdown which is a sign Ghanaians are willing to do anything to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

He was however quick to add that education on the restrictions outlined by the president had not gone down well in some parts of the Ashanti Region. “Most people in some rural parts of the Ashanti didn’t know of the lockdown. And we as media personnel had to educate a lot of people on these directives,” he said.

The Ministry of Transport per the President’s directive on social distancing has declared that all public transports should reduce the number of passengers in their cars from 4 to 3 people per row. This is part of government’s efforts to fight the coronavirus outbreak.
