The Concerned Citizens of the Komenda Traditional Area have revised their plans for a demonstration against the leasing of the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian company. The protest which was initially set for Tuesday, August 13, 2024, in Komenda will now be held in Accra on a forthcoming date, yet to be confirmed.

The protesters are urging government to rescind the lease agreement and restore the Komenda Sugar Factory’s original intent processing sugarcane grown locally. They contend that the factory should prioritize domestic sugarcane over imported raw sugar. Furthermore, the demonstrators allege that the lease agreement was executed without following proper procedures and neglecting stakeholder engagements, prompting their calls for reversal and reform.

In an interview with Happy Kaseɛbɔ, Kwaku Abeiku, Convener of the group, revealed that the decision to relocate the protest to Accra is a strategic move to intensify their demands, amplify their voices, and secure the attention of top government officials.

The group is presently collaborating with key stakeholders and authorities to schedule a new date for the demonstration, which they anticipate will mobilize broader support, build stronger solidarity, and ultimately enhance the effectiveness and impact of their advocacy efforts.
