The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi has announced that Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which currently allows mining in forest reserves, will be revoked once Parliament reconvenes.
In an interview, Mr. Gyamfi emphasized President John Dramani Mahama’s firm opposition to illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.
He clarified that the delay in revoking the legislation stems from ongoing legal discussions on whether to amend or fully repeal the law. Nonetheless, he assured that all necessary procedures for its revocation are already in motion.
Gyamfi also revealed that Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has confirmed the bill to repeal the L.I. is ready and will be presented once Parliament resumes.
“L.I 2462 will be revoked by the NDC/Mahama government immediately Parliament resumes. There were legal issues as to whether or not it should be amended or revoked because there is a school of thought that revoking it could lead to a certain vacuum and that what had to be cured was the discretion or power given to the President to grant mining leases for people to mine in protected forest zones,” he said.
