Liverpool beat Manchester United 2-0 with goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk to open up a 16-point gap at the top of the Premier league on Sunday.

The result at Anfield was manager Jurgen Klopp’s second Premier League victory over United. Liverpool remain unbeaten in the league this season, boasting 21 wins from 22 games, with United the only team to take points off them after their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in October.

Van Dijk opened the scoring on 14 minutes, leaping above left-back Brandon Williams to deliver a thumping header past United goalkeeper David De Gea from right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner.

Roberto Firmino had a goal disallowed by VAR on 24 minutes after Van Dijk challenged De Gea for a high-ball on the edge of the visitors’ six-yard box. The ball fell to Sadio Mane before immediately making its way to Firmino, whose right-footed curling shot to the far corner of the goal was later ruled out.

Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum netted another disallowed goal shortly after, this time denied by the linesman’s flag, after he finished off a well-worked move in the final third.

Salah scored a last-minute breakaway goal to double the home side’s lead.

United stay in fifth despite the result, but remain level on points with Wolves with 34.
