Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has promised to restore and enhance the capacity of Ghana’s security services if elected in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at a community engagement in Agyei Kojo, Tema West, Mr. Mahama outlined his commitment of retooling the country’s security forces to improve public safety and combat rising crime.

He noted that during the NDC’s previous administration, significant investments were made to equip the air force, military, and police. He recalled the acquisition of helicopters and airplanes for the air force, transport vehicles and armored cars for the military, and a historic addition of 1,000 vehicles to the police service’s fleet.

However, Mr. Mahama expressed concern about the current state of logistics, emphasizing that no major upgrades have taken place since the NDC left office. He highlighted challenges faced by police officers, such as the lack of vehicles to respond to emergencies, making it difficult to combat crime effectively.

He pledged that an NDC government would provide security personnel with essential tools, including vehicles, bulletproof vests, weapons, and armored vehicles, to enable them to carry out their duties efficiently. He stressed that well-equipped security officers are crucial to addressing the armed robbery threat and ensuring the safety of citizens.

He reaffirmed that the retooling of security services is a priority in the NDC’s manifesto, promising that his government would take decisive action to empower the security forces and restore public confidence.
