President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year contract extension for the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno who is due for statutory retirement in December 2025.
The decision follows a recommendation by the Police Council and is aimed at sustaining ongoing reforms and strengthening operational efficiency within the Ghana Police Service.
The announcement was contained in an official letter dated 25th November, 2025 and signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama.
According to the statement, the IGP’s re-engagement takes effect from 28th December 2025, immediately after he attains the mandatory retirement age. During the extension, he is expected to continue in his role and execute all duties and responsibilities attached to the office.
The Presidency noted that the Police Council is confident that the IGP’s continued leadership is crucial during this “critical period,” particularly as the service works to consolidate reforms, enhance operational effectiveness, and maintain national stability.
The IGP has been requested to confirm acceptance of the re-engagement in writing within three days of receiving the communication.
