The Ghana Police Service has announced the closure of several key roads in the Greater Accra Region as part of a special operations exercise running from September 21 to 24, 2024.

According to the Police, the road closures are necessary to facilitate the operations, and officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will be on hand to assist motorists during the period.

The affected routes include:

  1. Traffic from the Central Business District (CBD) to Independence Avenue, connecting to Liberation Road, will be blocked at AU Roundabout.
  2. Traffic heading from the AU Roundabout will be redirected to Castle Road towards Ridge Roundabout, leading to the Kanda Highway and continuing through Gold House Traffic Light (Kawukudi). Alternatively, drivers can take Castle Road from the AU Roundabout and connect to Lokko Street, which leads back to Independence Avenue towards Labone and beyond.
  3. Vehicles at AU Roundabout can also turn towards Second Avenue (GI) and follow Ring Road Central, passing in front of the Police Headquarters to Dankwa Circle, then proceed through Cantonments Road to Ghana International School, and finally along Second Circular Road to Giffard Road (El-Wak traffic light) and beyond.
  4. Traffic from Madina towards Accra will be diverted at 37 Roundabout. Motorists will be redirected to Obasanjo Highway, leading to Gold House Traffic Light, and then onto Dr. Liman Highway (Kanda Highway), Ridge Roundabout, Castle Road, and finally the Accra Central Business District.
  5. Traffic from 37 Roundabout will be rerouted onto Giffard Road (Burma Camp Road), linking with Second Circular Road near Ghana International School, leading towards Cantonments Road and Dankwa Circle.
  6. As an alternative, drivers may use Giffard Road towards Trade Fair and join the Beach Road heading towards the Central Business District.
  7. Presidential Drive (behind TV3) will be blocked at the Kanda Post Office Junction, with motorists directed to use Dr. Liman Highway (Kanda Highway) to access alternative routes.
  8. Vehicles will be redirected from Obasanjo Highway towards Gold House Traffic Light and Dr. Liman Highway.
  9. The road in front of Prudential Bank will be closed to traffic from Ring Road towards TV3.

The Police have advised pedestrians to avoid the area between AU Roundabout and 37 Roundabout. Special arrangements will be made for people accessing 37 Military Hospital, TV3, and residential areas within the affected zones during the period.
