The 150th Anniversary Planning Committee (APC) of Mfantsipim’s sesquicentennial celebration has launched a nationwide mobile money shortcode to effect broad public participation in a fundraising drive for the school’s 150th anniversary events and celebrations.

The Committee announced that Old Boys, staff, students and well wishers can now contribute by dialing *920*1876# across all the mobile networks – MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo. To contribute, you simply dial the short code and follow the on screen prompts. The short code platform is designed to make giving simple, inclusive and accessible to well wishers across Ghana and the diaspora.

The shortcode, 1876, represents the year of the school’s founding and forms part of a wider strategy to facilitate grassroots
giving while mobilising resources for high impact legacy projects tied to the 150 anniversary.

Speaking at a pre-launch press briefing in Accra, Captain John Yamoah, Chairman of the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, called on old boys and friends of the institution to rally strongly in support of the celebrations. “This sesquicentennial is more than a school anniversary, it is a national
celebration of 150 years of secondary school education in Ghana. For over a century and a half, Mfantsipim has shaped generations of leaders, statesmen, professionals, academics and sportsmen who have served Ghana and the world with distinction,” Capt. Yamoah said.

Legacy Projects to Transform Infrastructure

Proceeds from the shortcode campaign will fund a portfolio of transformative legacy projects. These include upgrading residential and academic facilities, expanding STEM and digital learning infrastructure, improving sports facilities, establishing a museum to preserve 150 years of history and the construction of a commemorative monument to mark the milestone.

In his address at the pre-launch press briefing, the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, himself an old student of the school, praised Mfantsipim’s trans-generational contribution to national development. “Mfantsipim stands as a beacon of excellence and a model for
secondary education in Ghana. Its values, achievements and enduring legacy provide a powerful lens through which we can assess the journey of secondary education in Ghana,” Prof. Davis noted.

Year Long Celebration Ahead

The anniversary celebration, themed “A Legacy of Excellence, Leadership and Service to Inspire the Future,” will run from February through November 2026. The official launch is scheduled for April 11, 2026 at the Accra International Conference Centre, where Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang is expected to attend as the Special Guest.

The celebrations will reach a climax with a special two week programme running from November 4 to 15, culminating in the Grand Anniversary Durbar on November 14. The occasion is expected to be graced by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of the Oguaa Traditional Area.

Other planned activities include the unveiling of the Anniversary Cloth and songs, lecture series, several homecoming events, community outreach programmes, Inter-schools sports competitions and a Night of Awards to honour distinguished old boys, staff and contributors to Ghana’s pre tertiary education sector.

Well wishers, stakeholders and Friends of Botwe can support the Mfantsipim@150 legacy with their donations by dialling *920*1876# and following the prompts on any of the three mobile phone networks.
