The ranking member of parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee John Jinapor has appealed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to reconsider their decision to shut down their power supply plants due to ‘outrageous’ debt owed by some State Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
Government currently owes 1.73 billion cedis. The IPPs are demanding a 30% payment or they will shut down their plants on June 30.
After meeting the IPPs, John Jinapor says government must pull all strings to pay up.
According to him, the committee has impressed on the IPPs to exercise restraint to allow for an amicable solution.
The Yapei/ Kusawgu MP said the IPP’s constitute about 64% of Thermal power produced in Ghana. He stressed that the IPP’s supply about half of the total power generated in Ghana therefore a shut down in any of the plants will cause massive blackout and Low shedding in the country.
He called on the finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta and government to treat the issue as a matter of urgency and also show commitment.
