The Minority in Parliament has expressed deep concern over what it describes as the embarrassing and persistent absence of the Majority caucus from parliamentary proceedings.
Their criticism followed repeated delays in parliamentary business due to the lack of quorum, compelling the Minority to appeal to the Speaker to strictly enforce the Standing Orders of the House.
An official headcount later confirmed the presence of 103 Members of Parliament, allowing proceedings to continue.
Addressing the press, the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Jinapor, condemned the Majority caucus for what he termed as a “dereliction of duty” and a disregard for the Ghanaian people.
“What is happening now is most embarrassing and totally unfortunate. The Majority is simply shirking its responsibilities and taking Ghanaians for granted. During the 8th Parliament, when we had a hung House, members were always present. Now that they have power, they seem to have grown complacent,” he stated.
The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, also described the situation as a serious indictment on parliamentary leadership, particularly the Majority Chief Whip.
“This is a huge indictment on the leadership of the House, especially the Majority side. When I look across, their benches are empty. Parliament is made up of both sides, and while we expect our members to show up, we equally expect the same level of commitment from the Majority,” he emphasized.
