The Chairman of Parliament’s Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources and MP for Nkwanta North, John Oti Bless, and the Ranking Member of the Committee on Local Government and Rural Development and MP for Bantama, Francis Asenso Boakye, have called for national unity in addressing Ghana’s recurring flooding.

Presenting a joint statement on the recent flooding in parts of Accra on the floor of Parliament, the two lawmakers urged Ghanaians to rise above political differences, stressing that floodwaters do not discriminate and that the challenge requires a collective national response.

They noted that flooding affects all citizens regardless of political affiliation and called for coordinated, long-term solutions to address the recurring problem.

The MPs also expressed sympathy to those affected by the floods and urged authorities to move beyond reactive interventions by prioritising preventive measures.

They identified improved infrastructure, regular drainage maintenance, stronger institutions, sustained public education and the strict enforcement of existing regulations as critical to reducing the impact of flooding.

They further appealed to the public to desist from dumping refuse into drains and watercourses, describing the practice as a major contributor to flooding.

The lawmakers also extended their condolences to families who lost loved ones and expressed sympathy to all victims affected by the recent floods.

Other Members of Parliament from both the Majority and Minority sides also contributed to the discussion, sharing their views on the statements and the need for a united national effort to tackle the country’s flood challenges.
