President Akufo-Addo in a televised address on Sunday to update Ghanaians on measures being taken by the government to fight the coronavirus used the opportunity to take swipe at his political opponent over their recent comments on his fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Mr. Akufo-Addo said: “I know some political actors will want you to believe that our current numbers represent a failure on the part of Government. Do not begrudge them. They need to make such comments for their political survival.”

He added: “On the contrary, we must be emboldened in the knowledge that the four thousand, seven hundred (4,700) persons infected, so far, with the virus, have been identified, taken out of the population, isolated and are being treated.”

In a Facebook post on Saturday, the opposition flagbearer John Mahama said he is worried about the number of COVID-19 cases so far recorded in Ghana, especially the spike within the last 24 hours.

“Government is certainly failing the people of Ghana. Fear gripped many homes last night when the latest confirmed cases were released. And that is understandable. #COVID19 is real, my brothers and sisters.

However, the Chairman of the NDC’s COVID-19 team Prosper Bani has also described as unfortunate claims by the President that critics of government’s efforts at controlling the spread of the virus in Ghana are doing so for their political survival.

“We have submitted two documents so far to government, nowhere in our two documents have we criticized the government. If those actions are considered as criticisms to survive as a group that is rather overstretched.”
