Abigail Elorm Akwambea Mensah, the Deputy National Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for an unconditional apology from Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Majority Leader of in Parliament, for his recent “despicable attack” on Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, the NDC’s 2024 Running Mate.

The uproar ensued when Afenyo-Markin, during a parliamentary session, launched what she terms “a scathing personal attack” on Prof. Opoku Agyemang, citing her alleged failures during her tenure in various governmental positions.

He criticized her selection as running mate, questioning her ability to represent the future of Ghana due to her age and past performance.

Abigail Mensah, speaking on behalf of the NDC and Ghanaian women at large, condemned Afenyo-Markin’s comments as “shameful” and “derogatory to womanhood.”

She emphasized Prof. Opoku Agyemang’s distinguished career, highlighting her academic accomplishments, ministerial roles, and significant contributions to education in Ghana.

“Prof. Opoku Agyemang is not just a woman, but an accomplished and celebrated Woman of society,” she said

“Her track record and political achievements undoubtedly make the NPP jittery and uncomfortable, hence this shameful well-rehearsed personal attack on her.”

The NDC Executive further criticized the hypocrisy in attacking Prof. Opoku Agyemang’s age while supporting older male candidates, pointing out the irony of the NPP’s stance.

She called on fellow women to rally behind Prof. Opoku Agyemang, emphasizing the importance of women’s inclusivity in politics and the nation’s decision-making processes.

The demand for an apology from Afenyo-Markin resonates not only within the NDC but also among members of the opposition, who have expressed solidarity with Prof. Opoku Agyemang. The NDC has indicated that they will not relent until a formal apology is issued.
