The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has launched a fierce condemnation of the Tamale High Court ruling ordering a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election, describing the decision as one that “rewards violence, chaos and criminality.”
Addressing journalists at the NPP headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, on Tuesday, December 9, Nana B asserted that the court’s judgment fundamentally violates established legal principles and threatens the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.
According to him, the violence that occurred during the 2024 elections in Kpandai was orchestrated by supporters of the
National Democratic Congress (NDC), who allegedly stormed the collation centre, vandalized electoral materials and forced the Electoral Commission to relocate the collation process for security reasons.
“It was the violent criminal act of the petitioner’s supporters that forced the relocation of the collation. They destroyed materials, created terror, and made it impossible for the process to continue at the original venue. Now the judge says that because the petitioner was not notified of the new venue, a relocation caused by his own supporters’ violence the entire election must be voided. Do you comprehend this adversity? Do you see this catastrophic precedent?,” he said.
Nana B said the ruling violates a “sacred legal principle” that an offender must not benefit from his own wrongdoing.
“This judgment rewards violence. It sends a chilling message: if you are losing an election, create chaos, destroy materials, then run to court and claim your rights have been violated. If this stands, it will destroy our democracy. It will turn every election into a battleground and make thuggery profitable,” he warned.
He described the ruling as a “monstrous principle” that must be overturned to safeguard Ghana’s electoral jurisprudence, calling on appellate courts to “uproot this poison before it infects our entire legal system.”
Nana B disclosed that the NPP and the incumbent MP for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, have triggered a series of immediate legal steps to challenge what he called a “perverse judgment.”
According to him, the MP has:
1. Filed a stay of execution to halt the implementation of the High Court’s order for a rerun.
2. Submitted a notice of appeal to the Court of Appeal, seeking a complete overturn of the ruling.
3. Initiated an application for certiorari at the Supreme Court, requesting the highest court to quash the decision and restore constitutional order.
“The New Patriotic Party stands as one solid rock behind the Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam. His fight is our fight. His cause is our cause,” he declared.
Nana B assured constituents that the NPP fully recognizes their mandate, which he said was clearly expressed in the MP’s 3,732-vote victory margin, a figure he described as “indelible and unmistakable.”
He reiterated the party’s commitment to using every lawful means to defend what it considers the legitimate mandate of the people of Kpandai.
