The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has officially announced the commencement of the transition from biometric passports to chip-embedded passports, which took effect on April 28, 2025.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, the Ministry assured Ghanaians of a smooth and efficient process as they move towards the more secure, technologically advanced passport system.

According to the Ministry, approximately 30,000 applications submitted through the old biometric system are still pending. Among these, about 7,900 applicants have incomplete applications. The Ministry emphasized that such applicants will not incur additional charges to complete their application process.

To facilitate the completion of these pending applications, applicants with incomplete documentation are urged to visit the new online portal at passport.mfa.gov.gh and follow the prompts to finalize their applications.

The Ministry has outlined specific guidelines for the public:

1. Applicants who began their passport application on the old system must complete their process within 90 days.

2. Individuals with already scheduled appointments on the old platform are to proceed to their designated Passport Application Centres for biometric data capture on their scheduled dates.

3. Those who missed their appointments on April 28th and 29th, 2025, are advised to visit their respective Passport Application Centres to continue with the processing of their applications.

The transition marks a significant step in enhancing the security and global acceptance of Ghanaian passports, as chip-embedded documents offer improved protection against identity fraud and unauthorized access.
