The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested two suspected drug dealers and recovered 170 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp during an intelligence-led anti-drug operation at Katariga in the Tamale Metropolis.
In a statement issued and signed by the Northern Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Wisdom Lavoe, the Command said the operation was carried out on Monday, July 27, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m. by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team, popularly known as Red Maria, as part of sustained efforts to combat drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the region.
According to the statement, the first suspect, Godwin Yamegi, 32, was arrested with two parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. During interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that the suspected narcotic substance had been supplied to him by Seth Amekuse, 33.
Acting on the information, the Police proceeded to the residence of Seth Amekuse at Katariga, where he was arrested. A search of his room led to the recovery of an additional 168 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The Police said a total of 170 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered during the operation.
The exhibits have since been handed over to the Regional Drugs Law Enforcement Unit for further investigation and processing.
Both suspects are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations and will be arraigned before court upon the conclusion of investigations to face the appropriate charges.
The Northern Regional Police Command commended the public for its continued cooperation and urged residents to volunteer credible information on drug-related and other criminal activities through the nearest Police station.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents by relentlessly pursuing individuals involved in the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs.
