Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of having attempted to buy off James Gyakye Quayson, the party’s candidate for the Assin North constituency, so he wouldn’t run in the just ended by-election.

In a Facebook post he made on Monday, July 3rd 2023, he stated that certain NPP members threatened to imprison Gyakye Quayson if he was to be re-elected after they failed to buy him off.

He also applauded Gyakye Quayson for his enduring dedication and affection for his constituents, noting that the MP remained steadfast in his resolve to fight for justice in spite of a number of obstacles.

Sammy Gyamfi credited Quayson’s individual commitment and perseverance as the cause of their success.

“Not much has been said about the relentlessness of the MP-elect for Assin North, without which victory may have eluded us.  They tried to bribe him to back off. When they failed, they threatened him with jail. But in all these things, he was unwavering in his commitment and love for his people. Always calm but confident; humble but courageous; sober but inspiring; meek but fearless”.

Gyakye Quayson won the Assin North by-election with 57.56 percent of total votes cast, beating Charles Opoku of the NPP, who got 42.15 percent of the vote, and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), who also got 0.29 percent.
