The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to put an immediate stop to the alleged unlawful actions being carried out by its supporters across the country.

Speaking at a press conference today, held at the NPP headquarters in Asylum Down, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, expressed concern over incidents of violence reported in various parts of the country following the general elections held on Saturday, December 7, 2024. He emphasized that these acts violate Ghana’s democratic principles.

“Why are these NDC supporters going ahead to engage in such acts of violence when our presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded less than 24 hours after the election?” he quizzed.

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin, elaborated on the situation, claiming that NDC supporters had coerced electoral officers into declaring results without following due process. He added that several members of Parliament from the NPP had been threatened.

He cited specific incidents, stating, “Patrick Yaw Boamah, MP for Okaikwei South, is unable to sleep at his residence. Patrick Boakye-Yiadom, MP for Obuasi East, was locked in his room at gunpoint and forced to sign documents. Why should a member of Parliament fear for his life simply because he is participating in democracy? Even in my constituency, lies are being spread about my constituency chairman to incite violence and attack members of the NPP.”

Afenyo-Markin further alleged that these actions were part of a coordinated efforts by NDC leaders, who had promised key positions in the next government to individuals orchestrating the violence. “His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President-elect, National Chairman Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, are responsible for these attacks. They provide fuel, vehicles, and other resources to facilitate these acts. We are fully aware of this,” he claimed.

The NPP called on the leadership and executive members of the NDC to put an immediate end to these acts of violence to safeguard Ghana’s democracy and prevent the loss of lives.
