A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Fiifi Decker, has expressed disappointment in President John Dramani Mahama’s failure to address workers’ salaries during the 2025 May Day celebrations on Thursday, May 1.

In an interview on Happy 98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show with Reynolds Agyemang, Mr. Decker noted that although President Mahama recently announced a 10% salary increment for public sector workers, the raise was widely criticized as insufficient. Despite the concerns, no adjustments were made.

He contrasted this with recent hikes in utility tariffs by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), 14.75% for electricity and 4.02% for water which takes effect tomorrow, May 3, 2025.

Decker argued that the utility increases surpass the salary increment, exacerbating the financial burden on public workers. He expected the President to use the May Day platform to announce a further salary adjustment that would align with the rising cost of living but unfortunately the President didn’t.

He also expressed concern over the ongoing power crisis, commonly referred to as ‘Dumsor’ which has worsened despite the increase in electricity tariffs.

He emphasized that workers, such as hairdressers, barbers, and tailors, depend heavily on electricity to run their businesses and are being adversely affected.

Mr. Decker urged President Mahama to implement effective measures to resolve the ongoing electricity challenges and ease the economic pressure on Ghanaian workers.
